Planning for success(ion)

Meeting the younger generations' aspirations and expectations

Planning for success(ion)

LPM’s last edition of the year is here! This month we discuss succession planning in SME firms, a holistic approach to employee well-being, and why technology doesn’t necessarily mean increased productivity.

Dolly Parton’s Nine to Five, released in the ’80s, paints a picture of an inflexible workplace with no opportunities for promotion. Luckily, workplaces — including those in law firms — have evolved since to provide more flexibility and there’s growing awareness of the need for more empathetic leadership. Unfortunately, though, the workplace Parton describes isn’t entirely a relic from the past. With younger generations having completely different expectations and aspirations, firms realise the need to make changes to future-proof their business.

SME firms are in a position to leverage new ways of working and set a precedent for others to follow, and many have. We spoke to chief operating officers at Fox & Partners and Thompson Smith and Puxon, Emma Sell and Sean Stuttaford about their approach to succession planning and the opportunities they provide fee earners.
